Although Drake and Gucci Mane have collaborated a handful of times over the years, they once planned something much bigger together. In a recent interview with FakeShoreDrive’s Andrew Barber, DJ Drama revealed that the two rappers canceled plans for a joint mixtape under his Gangsta Grillz banner nearly a decade ago.

“Drake and Gucci almost did a Gangsta Grillz tape together. That would have been phenomenal,” he said. “[The early records] were all for the tape. I remember we all got on the phone and chopped it up and discussed putting it together. Drake was super excited. I think Waka just got out of jail. So they did like three records together early on. Those records were all for the project.”

Based on Drama’s statement about Waka getting out of jail, this was likely around 2011. Drake collaborated with Waka that year on “Round of Applause.” At the time, Drake had already worked with Gucci on 2009’s “In My Business” and “Street Cred” from the Atlanta rapper’s The Cold War: Guccimerica mixtape.

Although the Gangsta Grillz tape never surfaced, Drake and Gucci would eventually reunite on wax in 2016 for “Back On Road.” They scored a hit together the next year with “Both,” which hit No. 41 on the Hot 100 chart and earned Gucci his first Platinum plaque as a lead artist. Around that time, the two rappers announced that they were working on a joint EP titled The 6’ers, which never received a release. Frequent Gucci collaborator Zaytoven spoke about the project in a 2016 interview with VladTV:
