21 Savage and Metro Boomin’s new album, Savage Mode II, arrived complete with a narrative structure provided by none other than Morgan Freeman. The iconic actor recorded seven monologues for the project, which are interspersed throughout. Freeman told GQ that it was all pre-written for him, and Metro Boomin recently revealed the script’s throwback connection to Atlanta: it’s penned by Dungeon Family legend Big Rube.

Big Rube is known for his skits and interludes on albums by Dungeon Family acts, most notably OutKast. He’s recently provided similar services for acts like Future (“Big Rube Speaks”), Spillage Village (“Hapi”), and Offset (“Father of 4”). Freeman’s monologues are written in a similar style.
Freeman told GQ that the script’s writing attracted him to the project even though he wasn’t familiar with 21 Savage’s work.

“I read the copy and was like wow, there’s some wisdom in here,” Freeman said. “I think this is the way I think. It’s basically saying don’t suffer fools and when you want something go for that. If [Savage’s music] is a young people thing, then this is stuff they need to be aware of. So it’s a good thing to do.”

He was also excited to tackle a project outside what he’s typically known for. “What happens is you sort of get locked into a position,” he said. “Henry Fonda was in it, Spencer Tracy was in it, James Stewart was in it, even though he played a couple of bad guys. You don’t really don’t want to be cast into a mold, but after a few years, it’s bound to happen. Every [offer] that’s outside of what you consider [your] mold is fun to do. I got to jump at it.”
