Kevin Feige’s Star Wars Movie Has Taken A Big Step Forward
When one thinks of Kevin Feige, naturally the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes to mind, and rightly so. After all, as Marvel Studiosâ president, Feige has been the chief architect of this superhero franchise. That said, it was announced in September 2019 that Feige will also lend his talents to the Star Wars franchise by developing one of its movies, and said movie has now reportedly taken a big step forward by bringing aboard another Marvel talent.
According to Deadline, Michael Waldron, a more recent addition to the MCUâs lineup of creators, has been tapped to write Kevin Feigeâs Star Wars movie. Waldron first joined the MCU has head writer and executive producer of Disney+âs Loki series, and he was later selected to rewrite Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessâ script. His other credits include the hit animated series Rick and Morty and the upcoming Starz drama Heels.
With Michael Waldron reportedly being brought back to work on Loki Season 2 in some capacity, clearly the MCU is impressed with his talents. But itâs an even bigger deal that Disney and Lucasfilm are now willing to have him contribute to the Star Wars side of things. Itâs still unclear how long it will be until Kevin Feigeâs Star Wars movie begins production, but Waldronâs hiring at least indicates itâs making progress rather than having been shelved.
News of Kevin Feige producing a Star Wars movie came two months before Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the final chapter of the Skywalker Saga, was released in theaters. Even with Michael Waldronâs hiring, no details about the movieâs plot have been revealed yet, but in November 2019, Feige said he loved the notion of âexploring new people and new places in that universe.â Fingers crossed we learn who some of these new people and places will be sooner rather than later.
Kevin Feigeâs Star Wars movie is just one of a handful of cinematic Star Wars projects in development. Last month, it was announced that Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins will write and direct a movie titled Rogue Squadron, which will âintroduce a new generation of starfighter pilots,â seemingly during the New Republic era. In February 2020, it was reported that Sleight director J.D. Dillard and Luke Cage writer Matt Owens have their own Star Wars movie in development, and the following May, it was officially announced that The Mandalorianâs Taika Waititi will direct a Star Wars movie off a screenplay heâs co-writing with Krysty Wilson-Cairns. The Last Jediâs Rian Johnson is also still attached to spearhead a new Star Wars trilogy, although there hasnât been any update on its progress lately.
So while Star Warsâ live-action future looks bright in the television realm with shows ranging from Andor and The Book of Boba Fett to Ahsoka and The Acolyte, thereâs also a lot to look forward from the film side of the franchise. As far as Kevin Feigeâs Star Wars movie goes, with Rogue Squadron scheduled for December 23, 2023, the soonest it could hit theaters is by December 19, 2025, and December 17, 2027 is also a possibility. Weâll let you know when a release date is officially announced.
