Now, there are a few companies showing why those jobs are so important, and they are working to make sure those jobs are here to stay. Brad Jones found – it starts with a piece of clothing that seems pretty simple but tells a great story when it’s Made in North Carolina. Most people don’t ask questions about their t-shirts. But Eric Henry says, maybe we should. “Ninety-eight percent of the clothes today are made overseas,” Henry told us. “Then what happens overseas is, we’ve lost all connection to where your clothes are made. We’re able to do that in North Carolina; bring everything together and make that connection, tell that story and also deliver a higher quality product”. Henry’s story starts with TS Designs, a long-time Burlington company turning out shirts that can show you why they’re better. They sell to the public through their Solid State brand. Or you might see their Cotton of the Carolinas t-shirts. A QR code inside the collar can show you that it starts with cotton grown in Stanley County that’s spun, knitted sewn and sold within a few hundred miles. Pretty remarkable when you compare it to other shirts. Henry says, “I think it’s going to come out to be a better model than shipping our great North Carolina cotton around the world. The average t-shirt travels twenty thousand miles by the time it leaves the fields here in North Carolina, by the time it gets to a big box store. That’s just not sustainable.”

Cutting down on emissions, being honest and transparent about how their clothing is made, and paying workers at every step a living wage. Emily Stasiak works in Direct to Garment printing; she told us, “Obviously this is going to be a more expensive shirt. It’s completely made in the United States and when someone comes to us looking for price, they ask why it’s much more expensive. Because once they see the value in this story, see the value in what we’re doing, it clicks for them that we’re doing something really important here”.They’re also committed to using natural dyes instead of synthetic ones. Courtney Lockemer works with their Solid State brand and told us they are biodegradable, non-toxic and end up being another product that local farmers can grow for the company. A new line of caps will feature natural dyes, including black walnuts, Osage orange trees and Avocado pits. TS Designs creates a line of shirts for local Lowe’s Foods, and you’ll see them featured in stores near the checkout line. It’s worth picking up a shirt to feel the difference; as the shirt is garment-dyed, the color soaks in, leaving the logo print exposed. It leaves a beautiful design that’s perfectly smooth and very comfortable.
