Pig Mom Life T-Shirt . What to make of Vogue having published both reasonable—even ahead-of-the-curve—and utterly insane ideas about what to eat and why? How can the I will do this same publication at once have promoted the essentialness of appetite to good health and offered torturous tips for losing 10 percent of one’s body weight? (Did you know that once you’ve lost 10 percent of your body weight, chemical signals in your brain insist that you’re starving and make you hungrier and slow your metabolism?) I think the contradictory advice points at a truth at once evident and hard to believe: that our attitudes about fatness and thinness have less to do with fashion or health than with conflicting societal aspirations and fears. Sabrina Strings, a sociologist at the University of California, Irvine, and author of Fearing the Black Body: The Racial Origins of Fatphobia, has shown that some of the historical bias against bigger bodies served to distinguish between who “deserved” to be a slave and who deserved to be free. Joy Cox, Ph.D., author of Fat Girls in Black Bodies (2020), tells me the body mass index (BMI) was invented in the early 1800s by a Belgian statistician. She says it was never intended as a health indicator and fails in the case of athletes; a higher BMI might accompany other negative health factors; it might not. “Imagine living in a larger body,” Cox says, “and not being able to get life insurance, based on a number, not based on your health.” I put down my Champagne. Lindo Bacon, who studies the physiological effects of trying to lose weight, tells me that people who experience weight stigma have a greater incidence of disease. “We’ve been making a lot of mistakes by just assuming fat is bad,” Bacon says. “I’m not saying that weight has nothing to do with health. What I’m saying is that it’s very much blown out of proportion in terms of its role in health.”

Vogue’s history of insisting on extreme dieting while publishing good sense and good science reflects a contradiction that is perhaps inside the I will do this whole American experiment Pig Mom Life T-Shirt . There is an irreconcilable ambivalence toward the human and material costs and benefits of creating a land of plenty. It strikes me as unlikely that the paradox will be resolved. But I find it hopeful that we’ve at least begun to dispense with the notion that only thin bodies are healthy and good. And to replace fantastical diet prescriptions with the common sense that healthy bodies eat all kinds of foods, depending on circumstance, and that they move. I will say Vogue’s diets have been right at least twice. A little Champagne at lunch is a sound choice, regardless of the rest of the meal, and, as an anonymous writer put it in these pages in 1906, “There is healthy fat as there is unhealthy fat, and unless your avoirdupois becomes such as to make you uncomfortable…you should leave it alone.”
