Personally, “natural training” is something Guinea Pig Buckle Up Buttercup You Just Flipped My Witch Switch Halloween shirt . I use in reference to using the natural way horses communicate. Essentially, I use natural pressure and release. Big name trainers are great at marketing the “natural horsemanship” many people crave, but some of it is all smoke and mirrors from my experience. Oh, and gadgets that are triple the price just because a certain name is added to it. But that is a WHOLE differemt can of worms. When I am free lunging my training horses, I use their natural body language to get my point across. If I want the horse to walk, I step behind theird driving line and ask them to move forward. If they don’t, I ask again with a little more pressure — louder clucking, a bigger step. If they still don’t understand, I cluck louder, say “walk” and wave my arms while moving along the driving line. This is similar behaviour to how a boss mare in the herd would tell a subordinate colt to move — she’s going to ask, ask firmly, and then TELL that colt to move. Now, I’m not a horse so I have no ears to pin nor 1100lb to barrel towards a colt to move. It’s a point of establishing that I am the boss mare — when I wave my arms and give the cue in a louder voice while moving towards them in a bigger movement, that’s my boss mare move. Honestly, there is not one correct way to train a horse. Every horse is different; I adjust my training regiment to each training horse I have. However, I have found that using natural horse communication works well for the building blocks of training. There is nothing “natural” about the things we ask our horses to do; however, some natural horsemanship and training can at least help you develop a better bond with your horse if you can effectively communicate what you are asking with their language.

Most animals can make themselves understood within their species and to others, through body language Guinea Pig Buckle Up Buttercup You Just Flipped My Witch Switch Halloween shirt . They also talk to us using body language, but humans are generally too self-centered to understand what they’re saying. We expect all communication to be verbal. Other mammals don’t have the same vocal structures we have; we don’t have the same vocal structures they have. Our brains are put together differently. That said, some of our closer companion animals, like dogs and cats, can sometimes learn to make sounds that approximate words in our languages — I had a dog that could say “how are you?” — it came out “row-rar-roo” but she only did it as a greeting. Did she know what she was saying? I doubt it, but she knew it would get her some positive attention and interaction with me. Cats are probably best at mimicking sounds we make, as they are naturally vocal animals. Who doesn’t know a cat that makes a sound that is eerily similar to a human word? Again, it’s doubtful the cat knows what it’s “saying”; rather, it’s learned that making that sound to a particular person will result in positive attention and interaction (and usually food). If we care to make the effort, we can learn to communicate very well with fellow mammals using body language and mental projection (meaning you form an idea then concentrate on it intently). The intent concentration comes through in your body language, and the animal responds to it. I used this extensively when I had horses, particularly when they’d run up for attention. I’d form an image of a boss mare in my mind, ears flat back and teeth bared, and concentrate on the image. It would make my body language say “boss mare here, don’t crowd me” and the herd of eager horses would stop about 6 feet away and wait politely for me to greet each one.
