She explained how the 2018 wildfires in Malibu changed her perspective on music

Miley Cyrus‘ last album, Younger Now, dropped more than three years ago as she was pivoting back to her country roots coming out of the psychedelic Dead Petz era. Now, she’s gearing up for yet another career makeover, this time with her upcoming seventh album, Plastic Hearts.

Cyrus officially announced the album after scrapping plans to drop a series of EPs that she first began with 2019’s She Is Coming. Instead, she’s embraced a new, throwback rock sound and is set to drop her next project very soon.

Plastic Hearts is set to drop on Friday, Nov. 27th.

The Album Art
Cyrus revealed the artwork, shot by iconic rock photographer Mick Rock, in late October:

The Songs & Features
Cyrus released the album’s lead single, “Midnight Sky,” on August 14. The song peaked at No. 14 on the Hot 100 chart.

She explained to Joe Rogan that the song’s title was inspired by “Heart of Glass” by Blondie. After performing the track at the iHeartRadio Festival, Cyrus released her cover on streaming services as a double single alongside “Midnight Sky”:

The singer scored another viral cover moment with a performance of The Cranberries‘ “Zombie,” which she also released to streaming services:

All three tracks are expected to appear on the album.

The Recording Process
Cyrus originally planned to release a series of three EPs, beginning with 2019’s She Is Coming. However, as she explained in a recent Instagram post, the late 2018 wildfires that destroyed her Malibu home changed her plans.

“II began this album over 2 years ago. Thought I had it all figured out. Not just the record with its songs and sounds but my whole f-cking life,” she wrote. “No one checks an ego like life itself. Just when I thought the body of work was finished… it was ALL erased. Including most of the musics relevance. Because EVERYTHING had changed. Nature did what I now see as a favor and destroyed what I couldn’t let go of for myself. I lost my house in a fire but found myself in its ashes.”

Cyrus explained that while a lot of her old material survived, the event changed her perspective.

“Luckily my collaborators still had most of the music that was burned up in journals and computers filled with songs for the EP series I was working on at the time,” she explained. But it never felt right to release my ‘story’ (each record being a continual autobiography) with a huge chapter missing. If it were a chapter in my book I guess I would call it ‘The Beginning’ which usually when something is over we call it ‘The End.’ But it was far from that.”
