Mariah Carey Returns To No 1 On The Hot 100 With “All I Want For Christmas Is You”

Her 1994 Christmas classic is shaping up to be an annual chart-topper.
Mariah Carey first reached No. 1 with “All I Want For Christmas is You” last December. One year later, her 1994 single is back atop the chart. Billboard reports that the song jumped from No. 2 to No. 1 this week, marking its second stint at the top of the Hot 100.

The song earned 31.4 million streams, as well as 7,000 downloads and 27.1 million radio airplay audience impressions. She’s now spent 83 total weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart, the most for any artist by far. Rihanna sits in second place, with 60 weeks, while The Beatles have 59.

Although Carey’s 2019 ascent up the chart was seen as long-delayed justice, it’s now shaping up to be an annual occurrence. With more holiday tracking weeks on the way, the song seems poised to remain atop the chart. Carey has continued her annual Christmas promotional tour, too, staging a high-profile live stream concert alongside Jennifer Hudson and Ariana Grande.

Back in 2019, Billboard’s Senior Director of Charts Gary Trust explained to Genius that the growing annual phenomenon of Christmas songs’ chart performance came down to the same trend affecting the rest of the industry.

“It’s pretty much just one word: streaming,” he said. “We’ve seen streaming gain so much over the last few years. We’re really seeing it with holiday songs, so this is a case where it’s not just hip-hop that’s proving it can be a streaming monster.”

He noted that advancing technology like smart speakers has changed the way people access Christmas music.

“It’s just so easy for someone who isn’t even that technologically inclined, who may not be a streaming person throughout the year,” he said. “It’s easy for anyone of any age [to say], ‘Alexa play me Christmas music.’ So we’ve seen a big uptick in the streaming of holiday songs. Amazon itself was a big driver of that list. Holiday music is a shared experience, probably more so than other formats.”
